The power of virtue and religious discipline.
You and I, especially I, are nothing and the burden of our sins and our wretchedness warns us sufficiently that we must never be proud of being effective for God’s work. However, when I think of the past, when I see what poor weak men like us have achieved in the world by the power of virtue and religious discipline, I cannot avoid thinking that if you imitate their example, you will receive similar blessings.

Is that how you understand your role as procurator, when it is a question of the lives of your confreres and of the Christians, and of the very existence of the missions?

The Holy Father wanted it and asked me to do this service for the Church. What will become of me? I don’t know. However, if I were to perish in the doing of my duty, I would commend myself to you, my dear children, before God, for him to forgive my sins.
