The Missionaries of Africa, better known as the White Fathers

We are a congregation of apostolic life, composed of priests and brothers united by a missionary oath and living in community. We were founded in 1868 by Cardinal Lavigerie to evangelize the African world. Our charism requires that we work outside our own countries in the areas of first evangelization, justice and peace, integration of creation, and dialogue with Muslims, traditional African religions, and other Christian denominations.

We warmly welcome young people drawn by our charism to commit themselves as missionary brothers or priests after a holistic formation that is human, spiritual, intellectual and community-based. The formation process is in four stages:

1. Philosophical formation.

Phase 1 in Jinja (Uganda) : Philosophical studies

2. Spiritual formation

Phase 2 in Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso : The Spiritual Year

3. Apostolic formation

4. Theological formation for priest candidates or specific formation for brother candidates.

Phase 4 in Merrivale (South Africa) : Theological and Pastoral studies

The aim of this formation is to ensure that our missionaries are not just ready but also inspired and motivated to give their whole lives generously to the mission amongst Africans. We are committed to prepare happy and dedicated missionaries who are ready to make a difference.
