SO GREAT A SACRAMENT
I humbly dare to place at the feet of Your Holiness a pastoral letter that I have just addressed to the clergy and faithful of the Diocese of Carthage on the history of the dogma of the Holy Eucharist and Eucharistic worship in the ancient Church of Africa.

CHRIST’S LOVE COMPELS US
Today, however, necessity commands and necessity knows no law. The Council of the Society of Missionaries of Algiers has therefore just decided that two new caravans will leave, going by way of the Atlantic Ocean. One of these caravans is destined for the mission of southern Upper Congo, in other words the territory allotted to the Belgians by the Berlin Congress, while the second is destined for northern Upper Congo, in the territory which the same Congress has placed under the protectorate of France.

“HANDS OFF AFRICA!”
While Stanley, in the pay of the King of the Belgians, was carrying out this truly remarkable work of invasion and occupation, another adventurer, of Italian origin but a naturalized Frenchman, Mr de Brazza, with the financial support of France and on its behalf, was active in the same region, but on the right bank of the Congo, whereas Stanley and the Belgians were operating on the left bank. With much less financial aid and less support than Stanley, Brazza is far from having personally achieved what Stanley has done on behalf of the King of the Belgians.

I find this matter so unworthy of future missionaries that I would not hesitate to order an inquiry and would expel immediately from the seminary any child who would fail to this extent in the spirit of his vocation.
