Most Holy Father, they all share one desire: to advance on a sign from Your Holiness to dedicate themselves to the salvation of these poor nonbelieving peoples, bring them the Word of Life that they have not yet heard and die in serving them, knowing that those who give up everything they possess on earth for Our Lord will receive the hundredfold even here below in consolations and graces and then life eternal.

Letter to the missionaries of Equatorial Africa (30th November 1884)
My dear Sons,
I am writing today to all the mission posts in Equatorial Africa, and I do this for two reasons. Firstly, so that you do not think I have forgotten you or that my fatherly affection for you has diminished. In spite of the distance and in spite of the sometimes lengthy silences we maintain between us, I, for my part, am always greatly interested in all that happens to you.

The surprising thing is that we still rarely ask ourselves: “Why” does this tragedy continue to happen today, even with greater cruelty, without trying to heal the root causes of this humanitarian catastrophe? Why are we content with “patches”, hospital care, food banks and material aid, while letting bodies continue to go down the river, and people cross the seas at great risks, fall on the battlefield or die oppressed and marginalized?
